Are you familar with Linux? If so, you may wanna download>> http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download and set it up (Note that I do not have any experience with linux, but some members here do, Singachea and Mike might have done so).

Else, simply get a Windows OS which would be very familar with everyone, i suppose.

good one to try out....small and fast so good for laptops...you can run from the live cd so there is nothing to install...plus works well with wine so win32 software can be run.

For windows I'd say 2000 is a good all-rounder and if IE , bloat and uneeded services are disabled/removed its pretty quick...don't bother with the service packs as they turn it into XP without the eye candy(Et phone home stuff).

wow, the puppy is so cute. I wish i am not so lazy and force myself to experience with linux but hey no complaint as i am happy to use windows vista

You can go for Win Vista. For this you should have good RAM in your laptop. You can visit www.planetonline.com for online shopping at reasonable price.
