You have a great website, good quality content, cool tool. So what? If no one even know your website exists?
It is very importance that you make your website known to the world. One way to do this is to submit to free or paid directory out there. The more you submit to, the higher chance your site get accepted. The more directories displayed a link to your site, the more clicks may be generated from that particular site.
Another important of directory submission is that your site will get indexed faster if it's a new site and the directory is an older site. In addition, each links to your site will help your PageRank to increase as well.
So what are you waiting for?

I don't agree that all websites should be submitted.
Sometimes, we just want to have fun with our friends and enjoy sharing ideas among our community. There is no use to link to others for some cases. It may cause disadvantage such as flooding bandwith.

Ya, that's also a fact.
I'm sure there's people out there try to look for other site as well. (May be long lost friends try to search through google?) heheh..

I think it's really impractical. I have many long lost friends and they somehow knew my email, but they never drop me an email.
From this test, i can guess in 95% confident interval that it never happens.

Then what is the purpose for you to create a website? To keep them to yourself and your own community? Afterall web is about sharing of knowledge, wasn't it? Since you have already spent your time and effort in creating the platform of Knowledge, why not share with others too?

aaliyah: i agee with your question.
Since 90% of people use Search Engine to reach other sites, Page Rank has performed as a very important role in SEO. So the work submit your site to hundreds directories is very helpful.

I also think it's important to submit your site to search engines. I would definitely start with http://dmoz.org - this can give you tons of traffic;however, it can take a really long time for them to list you.
I can also understand not submitting your website. I mean, if you don't want anyone to see it other than your close friends, then why would you? But sometimes the web finds you, and you can't control this. I think this happens with "spiders". Am I right about that?

Directory is one thing but making your site useful for users is another! Be sure to well balance between the two i.e. to spend more time building good content and to submit more to web directory.

When I first got into this racket I would spent 15 hours a day pushing sites into any directory I could find. I just did not see the results worthy of the effort. I will still do it for some sites, but I tend to be more selective and spend less time on it. I think there is definately a diminishing return.
