Defrag is useless but not for the reasons stated.
When you save a file it is saved in parts. Some parts are saved here, some there. Basically what defrag does it puts it all into clumps to make it run smoother. Now that hard drives spin very fast, usually 7200rpm, defrag really isn't needed.
