One of the most annoying things I have noticed with personal computers is the noticeable drop off in speed and performance as the system gets older. When I first buy the system or when I have freshly installed Windows the whole system seems to zip along, programs open faster the system starts up faster.

Well I use no antivirus software for windows instead I removed IE/outlook,
close a few holes/ports eg 135/137 ,used netbeui rather than netbios for networking, remove uneeded services and active x.
The router provides a firewall though this though direct internet connection was still ok.
Avoid opening suspicious files/dodgy sites/spam links.

Windows can be made a lot safer...I picked up some virus within 30 seconds using a standard windows 2000 install but do not get any once the above changes have been made...runs faster too Smile ...treat the cause and not the symptoms.

Or use linux.

I gave this answer to a post about viruses though the same approach would help too...our machines performance do not degrade over time or need a reset....the way IE works is partly responsible and the rest is usually due to accumulated spyware etc.

I made such changes as windows in its standard form soon turned to mush when I started using it heavily.
Choose software carefully as some apps can cause problems too...monitor performance when installing anything new....turn off unneeded functions.

There is plenty of info on the web covering every aspect of optimising windows...google is your friend.

regards

mike

If you are looking for ways to speed up your system, always make sure to frequently defrag your drive and run Scandisk. The latest version of Windows (XP) has an option to defrag your drive in a way where the files you use most often load faster. Then, try to get rid of programs running in the background or at startup if they are not that important because they love eating up system resources. You can do this by running msconfig from the Run command and switch to the Startup tab. You can also manage your virtual memory if you know what you're doing for a larger speed boost.
