Hi,
Just trying to get another angle on how much apartments & rooms cost to rent in and around Phnom Penh for mid-long term (say a 6-12 month contract) rather than a hostel/hotel (which would be too expensive).
Basically i'll be looking to rent a room within maybe 5 miles from the city (cycle for transport), but i'm not sure where to start... Do they often have them available for non-tourist foreigners?
Ta - Harry

Hi harry,
Price for a rent apartment for quite far from city is rather cheap. You could get it like 100 to 150$ max per month for a room or even a floor for a good deal. I remember my mom used to rent out a floor with more than 5 rooms with just around 300 to 500$ per month. So You would get it less than 200$ for sure.
It's best you find the house when you reach PP, so you got a rough idea of how thing's like there.
Another point is that cycle may not be safe as you think? Getting a car is safer, I feel. And you could get used car as cheap as 1000$. No insurance needed too.
lastly, let me know when you about to go to Cambodia, I'm sure you could contact my brother for advice.
Cheers m8.

Oh and usually, the electricity price exclude in all contract and also the owner may request a one or two months as deposit. In return you could request for TV, Fridge, Aircon installed etc.
What you couldn't get most likely is the internet access as broadband is not widely accessible yet. The good news is that there are many internet cafe around with very cheap rate (1$ per hour or less).

Yeah I've been looking into internet access, and I should be able to get a 64k leased line in PP for ~$250 a month (a bit expensive).
I'm not sure if I'm going to be freelancing or not when I move, but I'll be looking around for contract and permanent positions and getting some CVs/resumes sent out to interested people - but money's definately going to be a problem in the first few months (e.g. I'd rather be safe and get a driving license, but I'm not sure what it'll be like along with the visa costs, flights, equipment shipping, deposit and everything else I need to get set up).
To be honest, the state of internet access around the major cities seems to be akin to the UK in ~1995, so there are lots of exciting possibilities in the next 3-4 years
Thanks for the advice guitarman.
Oh yah, I do have one more question, what kind of music is popular I'm very much a music fan (listening, producing and djing)

music? don't expect much. People there do not listen to rock nor country. we prefer simple pop style, boyband style. But you may have some luck going to those foreigner pub.
And what instrument you play m8? I'm a drummer and also play guitar
Regarding the first few month, I guess you could do some English teaching job. I'm not sure if they require you to have some sort of teaching certificate but for sure, there's still school around who doesn't need you to have some sort of certificate. Last time (6 years a go), I knew the going rate for teacher is around 6US$ per hour but for now, the rate may be up.
250US$ per month seems to be pretty heavy duty amount
