Linux is such a powerful operating system. It is a clone of the secured OS Unix. But most are not inclined in using Linux because of the impression that it is not user friendly. I have one recommended variant for Linux novice. This is Xandros www.xandros.com. Installation is easy and its GUI environment is like Windows. Try it.

The things I hate Linux is its fonts. Even though I try to install Windows fonts such as Time New Roman, I found that the fonts in Windows are neater.

The second thing is that I don't know how to install video codecs in Linux. All my movies need codecs Sad

Fonts...yeah some linux versions are better than others and other factors come into play for example the window manager can make a big difference and default settings do not always give the best possible results so a bit of tweaking helps ..eg 72 dpi used rather than 96 the windows standard.
Also the system for fonts on linux is a bit messy..a work in progress.

As for codecs linux media players have everything you need for most modern formats using opensource codecs which are generally faster too...and usually allow the use of windows versions by simply dropping them in a folder....the situation in linux is far simpler than windows.
I can watch full screen divx3 vids no problem on 450mhz processor but the same vids will not play on windows with divx player with a 700mhz processor.
There are live cd.s around designed just for multimedia playback.
If you have used videolan player on windows you will have some idea of what you get on linux.

Each operating system has its pros and cons ...a question of the best tool for the job...macs for graphics...windows for business networks...linux for speed etc

regards

mike

Another easy-install Linux is Ubuntu Linux. It's free.

You can run it from a CD without installing it at all!.
Next, you can install it on a PC with existing Windows and you can run Windows and Linux from the same PC then. All instructions on above link.
