I would like to have a say about Life in Singapore for students and as a working adult from my perspective.
As a student
Students face a lot of stress. Student in Singapore have to pass exams no matter what. Once they fail exams, they face the black mark and they have difficulty in getting the desired jobs. On top of exam stress, students in Singapore have to join extra activities outside their class room. These activities named ECA or Extra Curriculum Activity. Students in Singapore, literally, have to join those ECA in order to gain some points. These points will be used for their eligibilty to stay in hostels. It holds epecially true for foreign students such as Cambodian students in Singapore. The habits we have in Cambodia is different from what we actually do in Singapore and hence the Cambodian students in Singapore usually face a lot of culture shocks when they first arrive in Singapore.
As a employee
Although singapore government has adopted the 5 days working week for most institutions in recent year, the business hour has change to 8:30 to 6:00pm officially. This would make a total of 45+ hours a week of "officially" working hour. However, in reality, especially in IT company, you would have to work more than that. From time to time, you are requested to come to work on Saturday or even on Sunday. For those in the service world, their working day would be from Monday to Saturday (half day). Unlike in Cambodia, where most employees could go home and have a nab, Singapore working life is different. The time to travel back to home and back to office is more than the time allowed for lunch break which is around 1 hour for most employees.
However, life is great after working and studying. Singapore enjoy the peaceful life and safty. We could hang out at night, to disco, to KTV or to mid night show without any worry about robbery. In addition, the high standard of living in Singapore also comes with the high paying salary that we earn each month as a working adult. People live in harmony, whether you are christian, muslim, hindu, Cambodian or chinese. Life is good, afterall
