Does anyone put any importance on getting listed in something like DMOZ? I have submitted a few sites in the past but none have gotten listed. I just do not know how much time and/or energy I should expend on it.

I think it's pretty important. If you get listed on dmoz, you will be listed in google. It can be hard to get on dmoz though. Your website has to meet their standards. It must be complete and professional. Also, it can take six months or more for them to list you. Many of their categories don't have editors, so this takes much longer.

So are there any tips besides having a professional site to help with getting listed? My sites are professional. Also how do you know if a category has an editor?

When you go to a category in dmoz, at the very bottom of the page it will either say "volunteer to edit this category" or "category editor Joe Smoe."
If there is no volunteer, volunteers from neighboring categories are supposed to edit that section, but who knows if they ever get to them. You could always volunteer to edit a category you want to be in. I'm not sure what else you could do to get your site listed.

Triumph, I think you should worry of the "Description as well".
You cant say something like: "THE BEST, the most useful, very professional etc." I think it's something that sounds like boosting your site. Be humble..
I have never followed up my site, it's been 2 years now and I have hear none of the word from them. Well, I'm happy enough with other free directory.
Good luck with your submission.
Julie, How can we become the editor? I dont think it's easy, isn't it? then everyone would be joining it !!

You find the category you would like to edit - check at the bottom if that category needs an editor. There will be a link on the top right of the page that says, "become an editor." Click on that. You then have to fill out an application form. It's a bit long, but not too bad. They just want to make sure you know what you're doing.
I'm not sure how easy it is to become an editor. I've never tried myself. I have always wanted to though. If I apply, I'll let you know.

Getting your website listed in DMOZ is extremely important, as this is the directory that is used by many sites (including Google) to categorize your site. Getting listed in DMOZ has many advantages:
1. Your website gets linked by DMOZ, which improves your Google ranking, as DMOZ has a high PageRank. (PageRank is Google's system of rating a page's importance by analyzing how many other "high-ranked" pages link to it.)
2. Because DMOZ feeds many other sites and directories, a link from them means you're automatically linked from many other sites.
3. It's free. You could try to get a similar PageRank boost by getting/buying a link from another site with PageRank 7 or higher, but getting into DMOZ is cheaper and more effective.
4. You submit a site description with your website's address. This description shows up in Google's search results (not always - but often) together with your URL.
5. DMOZ is the biggest human-edited directory on the internet. Volunteers look at your site and include it in the directory only if it doesn't contain "spam," if it's useful, of interest, and on-topic. With all the cheating going on by webmasters trying to get listed in the search engines, a directory edited by humans has a lot of weight.

Guitarman, I try to stay away from hyperbole when putting in descriptions. I just found out yesterday one of my sites I submitted 6 months ago just now got listed, so there is no rhyme or reason.
I wish they had a process where they informed you of what is going on, but unfortunately your site could site there for 30 minutes or 30 months before anyone looks at it.
