Hehe yeah this is an American term, mainly amongst the teenage crowd. Getting owned or "pwned" as they often say, ties into embarassment but I've mainly heard it as a gamer type term, in reference to beating someone badly (as they have almost no score).

Yeah I think Anarch got it for the most part. It is pretty much kiddie slang for defeating someone badly. It originated with gaming, but now can be applied in many contexts. Perhaps you are having an online debate on a forum, and someone sends a message that shuts the other person down. Someone might say the person who got shut down in their argument was "owned" or "pwned", which is slang for the slang.
Basically means a horrible defeat. If India beat Pakistan in Cricket 30 to Nil, then Pakistan would have been owned.

That's about right, triumph and anarch. It can be used in so many ways...like Triumph said, in an argument. Or say, some kid attempted to (random example) skateboard off some ridiculously high ramp and failed, he would've been "owned". It can also be used to say something is much better than something else "my dog owns.". Weird kids these days. So many people typo "owed" that it became "pwned". That's about it.

Oh, I remember this friend of mine who is a gamer saying that to me. I thought it was weird and didn't get it and he had to explain it. I felt kinda lame and old and out-of-touch... hehehe.
