I just got to thinking about this after hearing radio commercials here in the US from the Software Business Alliance. Basically they run commercials asking people to report their employers if they are suspected of using non-licensed software. It is a pretty scummy campaign. I know because a long time ago one of my businesses were targetted because an incompetent employee who got fired reported us. We ended up fine through the investigation, but it was still a big waste of time.
Anyways, I know we have a lot of people here from around the globe, and I am curious how software piracy is viewed in your countries.

I'm not really sure about software, but from I know, you still have to be careful. Practically everyone I know does it, but you still have to be pretty hush-hush about it. Software is sooooo expensive. Sometimes the cost of a computer.
They did have ads running for a while to prevent the piracy of movies. I thought that was dumb.

It depends on the software in America. Games are ripped pretty often, and some of the companies are just idiots about it. Photoshop charges $1000 for a license. That's just asking to be pirated.

And the Gimp is free...there seems to be no middle ground for reasonably priced software.

or more...crazy.
Well it's more down to business/government/military paying whatever is asked...individuals are of no interest to large software companies...(windows is normally charged to the computer seller).
It amazes me how companies pay thousands to run a website whereas its possible to have the same setup for $30.
Perhaps we should go round companies offering to save them thousands for a small fee ..I read recently how many are turning to open source freeware as its it often better/more secure than the commercial version.
ok...off my soapbox

What if you live in a country where people won't pay for the software anyway and will only use it if it's free ?
