Below are some free web hosting I have known of. If you have known some other free web hosting, do share it here.
Free web hosting by technology
Windows free hosting i.e. ASP, .NET and PHP enabled
1- http://www.brinkster.com/Hosting/Educational.aspx
Goods: .NET enable with MS Access
Bads: low bandwith daily i.e. only 16.7Mb per day.
Apache free hosting i.e php and mysql enabled
1- http://www.tripod.lycos.com/
Goods: php and MySQL enabled i.e. you can host a phpBB forum for example. 1 GB of free monthly bandwith means more visitors can visit your site more often.
Bad: Annoying ads.
There actually more than the two above FREE web hosting but I prefered the two above for my personal testing web site. How about you? What free host do you prefer?

thanks for sharing guitarman, but nowsaday it's so cheap to host a site. Why bother to use free host? Usually free host does not come clean>> ads here and there or worst popup ads.

I came across some sources, but i have never tried yet since the free server i used is banner && pop-up free.
You may try the belows:
Kill popup
<script language=JavaScript>
time=setTimeout("test.close()",10);
</script><br>
<!--Instructions:
Just replace "test" to what ever the window name is(check your page
source after it is loaded) and set the timeout to what ever seconds you want:
1000=1s-->
Another method:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE=JAVASCRIPT>
if (window != window.top) {
top.location.href = location.href;
}
</SCRIPT>
Another methods:
<head>
<SCRIPT Language="Javascript">
onload = location.replace('index2.html#top')
</SCRIPT>
</head>
<body>
<a NAME="top">
</body>
Kill Geocities
<head>
<style type="text/css">
<!--
.none {
position: absolute
; visibility: hidden
; clip: rect( )
}
-->
</style>
</head>
<body>
<span align="center" class="none"> <!--#GeoGuide--> </span>
</body>
Remove host-banner (Tripod)
<!--After /head Tag Place The Following Script--!>
<!-- Copy And Paste --!>
<noscript>
<body>
</noscript>
<!-- End Of Copy And Paste --!>
<!-- Then Continue With Your Second Body --!>
<!-- This Body TAG Will Contain BG Color, OnLoad Comands ECT. --!>
However, I hear we now are unable to remove banner for Geocities...
I don't guarantee the above codes would work since some methods are adopted to different ISPs.

I found something interested:
200MB Disk Space
5GB Monthly Traffic
2 Domains Hosting
5 Subdomains
Free DNS Server
PHP, Perl/CGI-BIN
1 MySQL Database
FTP/FrontPage Access
5 POP3/IMAP E-mails
Instant Account Setup
Web-based File Manager
It's totally free (no banner). Take a look at http://www.awardspace.com/
