Have you ever tried to utilize the new version of Windows family, namely Windows Vista?
For me, I don't get a copy yet, but I heard that Microsoft improved on stability, security and looks for this version.
Yeah, after i see some screenshots, I feel it's cool.

It's true that the more advanced they enhance, the more cash we have to pay. Then why don't you take a look at Linux??
Are you sure that you are satified with your Windows XP? For me, not much because my Windows Xp is Pir---. I'm afraid one day NTU students will be fined. Second, my Xp is sometime really pretty idiot and unstable.
I'm looking to get a new copy of Vista...

I really don't think that Vista will do a whole lot to advance windows. Most of the changes are just little features that definitely aren't worth the money.

Did you guys see the recc. specs to run the software? At Dell, they are saying 2GB of ram, and at least a 2.5GHZ processor? Seems crazy to me, 2GB of ram is a ton, and for home personal use too many people are without even 512 ram.

Yeah ..seems a lot just to run an operating system
Using 2000 first release with IE and surples stuff removed.....seems well behaved and fast...one pc is 266 pentiium/96mb ram and runs it fine ..microsoft are dropping support for it this year so they must have got something right plus later windows/updates seem to be laced with feedback/validation/remote control crap..
...I suspect there is a 'buy new hardware' pressure going on as all the amazing improvements in hardware seem to be swallowed up by the latest operating system demands...
note icon graphic (eye candy) handling takes precedence over multimedia in the windows design spec.
Linux...good suggestion..I find the smaller distros the most interesting...fast...neat...puppy linux for example has the option to save sessions back to the cd...I'm running a pc with no hard drive with firefox etc and stunning divx playback all on a 55mb cd on a 450 k6.
Plus opensource software seems to be coming of age with most software needs having a free alternative (even flash creation).
this could get lengthy so I'll pop off for now
regards
mike

I will taste Linux again for next semester. Mike, you do know a lot of Linux, don't you? Can you recommend any distribution for a beginner like me?

Well I'm not an expert but I have tried a few...left for a while then got back into it.....
I mainly tried small distros.... puppy dsl feather and featherweight my preferences.
Puppy has many varients...is very versatile...aims to be simple...is debian in a flexible wrapper...not quite standard but what linux is?
Linuxos quite good but i find the larger distros a bit heavy but then again all have been run from live cd's so a proper install would be a different matter...plus larger distros cover the more obscure hardware situations.
Third party applications are getting very good too and of course theres firefox etc...even nero now.
Generally its good to try something different...you will benefit one way or the other..
enjoy

and the latest IE has firefox like features...check out the word plagarism
Windows itself was copied from someone elses system.....and IE was originally written by someone else
hmm ...seems to be a pattern there.
