Look in to alternative net software....
Use firefox or anything but Internet explorer......same goes for outlook and messenger....
Look into using 98lite/xplite to remove a lot of the windows software that lets spyware in..most windows security updates involve disabling active x controls...or use linux.
Basically the less your system resembles the standard windows setup the less likely you will suffer outside attacks....in fact you won't even need anti virus software.
The are some simple improvements to the network setup...google netbios/port 139.
There is a lot that can be done to improve the situation and a bonus is your machine will work better too
regards
mike

I reccommend using hiack this! to get rid of really stubborn spyware. About two years ago I had some issues and had a ton of spyware. A combination of Hijacks this and adaware cleaned everything up. Then I installed ad-watch from ad-aware which prevents anything from accessing the registry without permission and I have not had a problem since. It is really good piece of mind.
There are other products out there similar to ad-watch from other companies as well. Just look for an active monitoring program.

I use adaware and adwatch, like the previous poster stated and, so far, it's worked really well for me. It catches all sorts of hidden programs and files. The only time I ever ran into problems was with the Gator program. Aside from that, It's very good!

Hijack this! really helped me too, but be careful with which files you remove. Some spywares can be extremely annoying and you'd need an expert to get rid of all the files.
But definitely stop using Internet Explorer. Firefox is pretty safe against spyware.

Is Firefox another way of accessing the internet then? I have not heard of it. What are the differences between this and internet explorer?

Definitely swithc to firefox. Also, use adaware. If you go into custom, you can set it to even delete any spyware files that are in the registry. This prevents them from coming back as easily.
