People always suggest me to do defragmentation when my PC runs slow. I wonder if it really helps? and how does it help? Do you have any experience how it has helped you?
I noticed my PC run pretty slow after operating it for than 5 hours non stop. What can cause its performance to slow down after long hour of usage?

I don't think defragementation helps you to run your pc faster. Actually defragementation is used to relocate the files.
If you experience the slow performance after running pc for a while, it may be caused by memory usage. To make it running faster, you may have to release the unnecessary memory hold in RAM into Hard-drive.

Thank you Chea for the tips.

May I know how do I do that? i.e how to "release" the memory?

Well, the easiest way to improve the pc performance is to use Tuneup Utilities. I have to say it's awesome, it's very easy and reliable. There are many features such as:
TuneUp SystemControl
Lets you control the look and feel of the Windows interface
TuneUp StartUp Manager
Controls which programs are executed at Windows startup
TuneUp System Information
Provides comprehensive information on your computer
TuneUp Styler
Customizes the system icons, the boot screen and the welcome screen
TuneUp DiskCleaner
Removes junk data from your hard disks and recovers disk space
TuneUp RegistryCleaner
Removes invalid entries and references from your system
TuneUp MemOptimizer
Monitors and optimizes free memory in the background
TuneUp RegistryDefrag
Corrects physical errors in the registry and defragments it
TuneUp System Optimizer
Checks your system for settings that might be slowing it down
TuneUp Process Manager
Allows you to manage currently running programs
TuneUp Registry Editor
Helps you edit and search the registry
TuneUp Uninstall Manager
Removes programs you don't need anymore
TuneUp Shredder
Deletes files securely, ensuring that they cannot be recovered later
TuneUp Undelete
Recovers files that have been deleted from the Recycle Bin
Hey brother, i thought I used to send this software to you once. check it out. It may be useful.
If you don't have it installed, never mind. You can resize the virtual memory of paging, and delete some cache. Sometimes, you have to refresh after viewing video...

I was wrong. Now After installed that Tuneup Utilities. I found it to be very useful. I like the TuneUp MemOptimizer and TuneUp RegistryDefrag . Power ful and easy to use *thumbs up*

Defraging can help, but it really depends on what you are doing. If you have applications that are reading a lot of data from the drive, then it can help a lot. If it is just loading form the drive, then it won't help with actual peformance, but it will help with loading times.
It can also help with how long it takes to boot windows.
Unfortunately I am always on the verge of no space left, which makes it harder to defrag, so my drives end up very fragmented.

Could be related to this...
http://toastytech.com/files/comctl32.html
This may still apply to xp so might be worth a try...this happened to me after opening/creating folders and files though now I run the 95 shell the problem has disappered.....
There is a system in the windows defrag which rearranges programs to run faster.....this is only for certain windows apps and works in conjunction with applog....so defragmenting will usually speed up the shell and for example office but will have little effect on other applications.
You can disable this and taskmon.exe which generates the applog files and defragging will speed up...after all your windows install will change little once installed.
I find defragging several times whilst first installing windows and apps to a fresh disk works the best...so everything is installed neatly together as doing defrag later on will bring individual files together but the apps can still be spread all over the disk if you see what I mean.
Oh and finally set a fixed minimum swap file ...say 128mb...rather than letting windows do this...this will keep your disk tidier and speed things up a little...some people use a separate partition but I dont think this is critical.
have fun
mike

I defrag on a regular basis, but I use one of my computers for audio and if the computer has to search for the fragmented files it makes production time drag - and as they say, "Time is money."

Defragmenting does help it run faster, but on high-end machines it doesn't do much. The whole idea is that the files are easier to access if they are linear and together, but this won't have a huge impact on performace. It's still a good idea to prevent bugs though.
