I'm just arrived back from my Central Australia trip and now i'm trying to setup a share foler from my PC (which connect to LAN). However, even though it's already shared from my local machine, my friend couldn't see my PC and it said: "Access to resource \\mypcname has been dissallowed".

Having check internet for a short while, i found that the problem is related to disabling file's traversal thingy and I think the only to get around this is to contact the Information Department to enable the share system.

Anyone has other means to get over this ? i.e. to enable share folder from my PC.

cheers,
GuitarmAn.

Hmm was stumped but then wondered if this would work
http://www.rejetto.com/hfs/

I use it over my lan for windows to linux file sharing...router blocks it from the internet...since its on port 80 you may be able to use it.....your friend in theory just needs the ip of your machine..

It might be hard to ask them to enable sharing system due to stupid copyright stuffs. Why don't you set up an ftp/http server so that your friends can either upload or download? Isn't it the same thing just like windows sharing?

I got one more thought: Is it possible to recognize the Hall (in the University, there are many hall and they all have different IP address). So is there a way to reverse lookup the location of those who connect to my PC given the IP Address?

In orther word: when someone download the folder from my PC using the above sofware, I could see their IP address but couldn't find a way to contact them. (even I tried Net Send, but it seems it's block by UNI again)

If I understand correctly each computor would need a copy of hfs running to acheive sharing both ways, or some other kind of webserver...httpd on linux for example.

Another possibility is that ther are numerous chat programs for lan use , free software sites are littered with them, some may include file sharing ...as long as port 80 is used there should be no problem(or 139?)

Normally the university always blocks the flooded net send. I think the most we can know is his subnet and his pc name. Open up an irc server like in ntu, you can chat with them or set put live chat using http on your local machine.

actually they have one IRC here called: StrongDC but I ain't Operator and hence won't be able to access their IP address sadly.

Back in NTU time, we could use net send If I remember correctly?

NO, it's blocked. Try your localhost with asp.net & ajax.
